How to Move a Piano

Moving a piano can feel daunting, and for good reason. Pianos are large, often heavy, and fragile pieces of furniture. Whether you have an upright piano or a grand piano, the process requires careful planning and execution. In this blog, we’ll walk you through the steps of how to move a piano safely, and why it might be a good idea to consider professionals for the job.

Assessing the Situation

Before you even think about lifting that piano, take a moment to assess your situation. Consider the type of piano you have and the environment in which it will be moved. Measure doorways, staircases, and any tight corners.

It’s essential to know the dimensions of both the piano and the pathways it will traverse. If you find yourself dealing with obstacles like a narrow hallway or steep stairs, it’s wise to reconsider attempting the move on your own and hiring experts—to avoid any damage to your piano or your home.

Gather Your Supplies

If you decide to go ahead with the move, you’ll need some essential tools. Here’s a list to get you started:

  1. Piano Dolly: This is a specialized moving dolly designed to support the weight of a piano. If you don’t have one, you can rent one.
  1. Straps: Ratchet straps or moving straps will help secure the piano during transport.
  1. Blankets: Moving blankets or padding will protect the piano from scratches and damage.
  1. Tape: Use tape to secure the blankets around the piano.
  1. Piano Boards: These are sturdy boards specifically designed for moving pianos. Using a piano board allows for better weight distribution and makes it easier to maneuver the piano, especially over stairs or uneven surfaces. They also protect the piano's legs and help prevent damage during transport.
  1. A Helper or Two: Moving a piano is not a one-person job. Enlist friends or family to help you out.

Preparing the Piano

Once you have everything ready, it’s time to prepare the piano for the move. Start by removing any items that might be on or inside the piano, such as sheet music or decorative items. Next, close the lid of the piano and secure it with tape to prevent it from opening during the move.

If you have an upright piano, you can tip it slightly onto its back, using a blanket to cushion it. For grand pianos, you'll need to remove the legs and pedals. This step can be intricate, so refer to your piano’s manual for guidance.

Lifting the Piano

When it comes to lifting the piano, proper technique is crucial. Bend at your knees, not your back, and lift with your legs. If you’re using a dolly, carefully tilt the piano onto it. Make sure the dolly is secure and stable before moving.

As you maneuver through doorways and tight spots, take it slow. It’s easy to damage both the piano and your walls if you rush. Communicate with your helpers—decide on a lead person to call out directions.

Loading the Piano onto the Truck

Once you reach your vehicle, loading the piano is the next challenge. If you’re using a ramp, make sure it’s secure and wide enough for the piano. Use the straps to secure the piano to the dolly, and carefully roll it up the ramp.

When the piano is inside the truck, place it in an upright position and secure it with more straps. This will prevent it from moving during transit. Surround it with moving blankets or other soft materials to keep it safe from jostling.

Unloading and Setting Up

Upon arrival at your new location, the process is essentially reversed. Carefully roll the piano out of the truck and onto the ground, using the dolly again. Make sure the area is clear before you attempt to lift or move it. Once inside, position the piano where you want it, taking care to protect your flooring.
