How to Pack Moving Boxes the Right Way

Moving is a long process and one of the most stressful steps is packing up your old home. We know that packing can feel like an impossible task sometimes, but there are some things you can do to make it less overwhelming.

Developing a packing strategy and buying the best moving boxes and the right materials will make the process smoother, ensuring that your belongings arrive at your new home intact. Here are some of our expert tips on how to organize your belongings, what materials to use, how to pack your moving boxes, and how to stay organized during the entire packing process.

Step One: Declutter and Plan Ahead

Declutter First

Before you start packing, take the time to declutter your home. Go through each room and decide what to keep, donate, sell, or throw away. This step not only reduces the number of items you need to pack but also gives you a fresh start in your new home.

Plan Ahead

Give yourself plenty of time to pack by creating a moving timeline. Start packing non-essential items several weeks before the move. This way, you won't be rushed as moving day approaches and you can avoid last-minute chaos.

Step 2: Pack Room by Room

Organized Packing

Pack one room at a time to stay organized and make the unpacking process easier. Label each box with its contents and the room it belongs to. This way, you (or the movers) will know where to place each box in your new home.

Label Everything

Clearly label each box not only with its contents but also with any special handling instructions, such as "Fragile" or "This Side Up." This will help prevent damage and make unpacking more efficient.

Step 3: Use the Right Packing Materials

Recommended Packing Materials

  • Newspaper: Recycled newspaper or newsprint paper is ideal for wrapping and cushioning items.
  • Towels, Clothing, and Linens: Great for additional padding around fragile items.
  • Sturdy Boxes: Use good quality, medium-sized boxes to avoid overpacking and shifting.
  • Packing Tape: Ensure boxes are securely sealed.

Step 4: Pack Fragile Items with Care

Select a box that is not too large to prevent items from shifting. Also, make sure it’s not too small to allow for proper cushioning. Line the bottom of the box with crumpled newspaper for extra cushioning and make sure each box is fully packed to ensure nothing gets crushed when you stack boxes on top of each other.

Place heavier items at the bottom of the box and lighter, more delicate items on top to prevent crushing. Wrap each fragile item individually in several layers of newspaper to provide a protective barrier. For additional protection, use towels, clothing, or linens to pad the items further.

Step 5: Tips for Staying Organized

Create an Inventory

Keep an inventory list of all the boxes and their contents. This can be a physical list or a digital one. It will help you keep track of your belongings and make the unpacking process smoother. If you’re working with a moving company, this will probably be handled for you. If not, you can create one on your own for your DIY move.

Keep Essentials Accessible

Pack a separate box or bag with essential items you will need immediately upon arrival at your new home. This can include toiletries, a change of clothes, important documents, and basic kitchen supplies.

Color Code Your Boxes

Consider using a color-coding system for your boxes. Assign a different color for each room and mark your boxes accordingly. This will make it easier to identify where each box belongs when you are unpacking.
