How to Reduce Local Moving Costs: Expert Tips from Bailey's Moving & Storage

One of the most frequent questions we get at Bailey's Moving & Storage is, "How can I reduce local moving costs?"

It's a valid concern. Local moving costs are typically calculated based on the number of hours the move takes. Therefore, any steps you take to streamline the process can significantly impact your final bill. To get the best advice, we spoke with Austin Ducello, a member of our sales team, who shared his top tips on how to reduce moving costs.

Here's how you can save time and reduce moving costs on your next move:

1. Pack Your Own Boxes:

“While we offer packing services, packing your own boxes is a great way to cut costs,” Austin says.

Start packing your home early and pack a little each day to avoid feeling overwhelmed. As you’re going, make sure that you clearly label all boxes with their contents and the room they belong in. This will help our movers quickly place them in the correct location at your new home.

2. Declutter and Downsize:

Before you even start packing, take the time to declutter. Get rid of unwanted furniture, clothing, and other items. You can donate, sell, or discard them. “The less you move, the less time it will take, and the lower your bill will be,” Austin says. Consider whether that old armoire or extra set of dining chairs really needs to make the trip.

3. Disassemble Furniture:

“Our team can handle minor disassembly, like bed frames and couches,” Austin says. “However, disassembling furniture yourself will save valuable time.”

Take apart larger items like tables, shelving units, and entertainment centers before our movers arrive. Keep all screws and small parts in labeled bags to make reassembly easier.

4. Stage Your Boxes for Quick Loading:

“One of the easiest tips I give all my clients is to move all packed boxes into your garage or a central location, like your living room,” Austin says. “This ensures our movers can load the truck quickly and efficiently.” Clear pathways and remove any obstacles that could slow down the moving process.

5. Be Organized and Prepared:

Prioritize having all boxes and furniture fully prepared for loading before our movers arrive. This preparation will help us streamline the move and ensure everything goes smoothly.

“It’s also helpful for our team if you know exactly where you want things to go in your new place,” Austin says. “Communicate any specific instructions or concerns to our team in advance.”

Our moving day checklist is a great resource if you’re not sure how to prepare for your movers. It has 13 steps you can take to make sure that your home is ready to go, saving you time and money on moving day.
