When first deciding to move a house, you’re often confronted with a few key unknowns:
- When is this move taking place?
- Where am I moving to?
- How much will it cost to move?
Though we can’t provide answers to all the questions outlined above, we can give you a pretty good idea of what it’ll cost to move a house with a moving company. We’ve broken up pricing based on two key factors: the size of your home and the amount of household goods you plan to move.
Allow this article to serve as an approximate guide for the cost of movers according to home size or shipment size. Keep in mind that the prices outlined below are approximations, and that the cost of your move will be influenced by a variety of factors.
How Much Does it Cost to Move a House According to the Size of the Home?
When you begin obtaining quotes from movers, you’ll often be asked a few key questions:
- How many bedrooms are you moving?
- How many other rooms are located in your space?
Moving companies will ask these questions because it helps them approximate the size of your home and how much crew they’ll need for your move. It also helps them gauge how large the shipment will be so they know the size of the truck they should send to load up your household goods.
For local moves, expect to pay these ranges depending on the number of bedrooms in your home:
- Around $1500-$2500 for a two-bedroom home
- Around $2500-$3500 for a three-bedroom home
- Around $3500-$5000 for a four-bedroom home
Most local moves with full-service moving companies will be accomplished in about a day, with a two- or three-person crew. To learn more about local full-service moving, you can check out our blog on the subject.
Next, let’s evaluate the approximate cost of moving for long-distance or interstate moves. Keep in mind that this pricing is for around 1000 miles in distance. For moves longer or shorter than this, your move quote will differ.
- Around $5000-$7000 for a two-bedroom home
- Around $7000-$10,000 for a three-bedroom home
- Around $11,000-$13,000 for a four-bedroom home
You’ve got options beyond full-service movers when it comes to moving across the country. Read this article to learn more about the different ways you can arrange a long-distance move.
How Much Does it Cost to Move a House According to Amount of Items?
Now you’ve got a general idea of some pricing options when it comes to hiring full-service movers according to the number of rooms you’re moving. However, you can obtain an even better idea of how much your move is going to cost by understanding the amount of household goods you want to have moved.
Let’s break this down in more detail. If we’re talking about two moves that happen on the same day that cover the same distance, a move that involves transporting more furniture or boxes is going to be more expensive. With more items involved in one move over the other, the moving crew will work longer to load and unload those items. In addition, more household goods means more packing materials needed and more space required on the moving truck.
That being said, here’s an approximation for move costs by number of items moved. As with before, keep in mind that these figures are based upon historical averages, and your total move costs may differ depending on your circumstances. Most moving customers who hire local movers pay $6000 or less for a local move.
For local moves, expect to pay these ranges:
- Around $1500-$3000 for a small amount of household goods
- Around $3000-$4000 for an average amount of household goods
- Around $4000-$5500 for a large amount of household goods
Next, let’s evaluate the approximate cost of moving for long-distance or interstate moves. This is again calculated at a distance of around 1000 miles. Most moving customers who hire long-distance movers pay $18,000 or less for an interstate move, but your circumstance could differ.
- Around $4000-$7000 for a small amount of household goods
- Around $6000-$10,000 for an average amount of household goods
- Around $11,000-$15,000 for a large amount of household goods

As with any ballpark figures, the numbers listed above do not include all the services moving customers may require for an upcoming local or long-distance move. For example, these numbers don’t include pricing for packing, storage, international moving, car transport, and full-coverage valuation.
